My Best Holidays

My best holidays

Hello, and welcome back to 'English by Ear'. My name is Jack and I’m a 23-year-old man who was born and raised here, in England! On today’s episode we are going to be talking about some of my favourite holidays from my lifetime, including some of the best places to visit not only abroad but here in England.

England is notorious for having very unreliable weather, and as a result, a lot of people like to travel abroad for their holidays in search of hotter and drier weather condition.

With the price of package holidays and flights becoming more affordable in the last 30 years it is now easier than ever to travel across the world, especially within Europe.

Some of the countries that English people like to travel to for their holidays include Spain, France and Portugal. These are perfect locations for a hot summer holiday, or maybe even a warm winter break to escape the cold and harsh weather of England's winter time.

England is a very unique country because the United Kingdom is an island, meaning that it is surrounded by coast and beaches. This makes for some brilliant holiday destinations. Some of my favourite places to visit within England include Dorset, which is a small coastal town on the south coast of England, and also Scarborough which is a coastal town on the North East side of England.

However, it is also very easy to travel away for small city breaks to some of Europe’s fantastic countries. Some of my favourite holidays have been short and quick visits to places such as Stockholm, which is the capital city of Sweden.

When I was just 19, I spent 3 days there in the spring. Stockholm is somewhere that in the winter experiences extreme snow and cold temperatures. But in the spring, it was a beautiful place to visit, with great nature and wildlife, even within a busy capital city environment.

During my time in Stockholm, I visited many of the great sightseeing landmarks, including the beautiful Cherry Blossom park. This is a huge park that is full of pink cherry blossom trees as far as the eyes can see.

I also went and experienced some live music at Stockholm’s world-famous Ericson Globe. From the outside this arena looks like a complete sphere, almost like a golf ball!

But Stockholm isn’t my favourite place to visit, or my favourite holiday of all time. In fact, my favourite holiday was a trip I took with my family when I was a lot younger. I was just 11 years old.

Me, my two brothers and my mother and father all travelled to Orlando, Florida in America. We travelled by plane, with the journey taking nearly 10 hours! To fly from London to Orlando by plane you must cross the Atlantic Ocean. This is the second biggest ocean in the whole world!

Orlando is famous for its hot weather, friendly locals and most of all the theme parks. It is home to the world-famous Disney World, which includes over 6 fun-filled theme parks including Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom and Epcot! All of these theme parks are Disney themed, which as a young child is so much fun!

In total, we spent two weeks in Orlando and got to really experience the local culture and amusements on offer. Not only did we enjoy all the Disney theme parks, but we also went to two different water parks, The Kennedy Space Center and Planet Hollywood Restaurant.

I would have to say though that my favourite moment of the whole trip was when my father booked a limousine to take us out for the evening. A limousine, or limo, as it is more commonly known, is a type of car. The main difference between a limousine and a normal car is the length, with a limo being over 3 times as long as a normal car. It is a very luxurious way to travel, so I felt very special in this car! It was the perfect end to an amazing holiday.
