Where do they speak the Russian language?

Is it spoken outside Russian apart from expat communities?

I am not 100% sure but I think that Russian is spoken mainly in Russia. As far as I know Russia was not a colonial power.

Of course, there are previous Soviet countries where people speak Russian and other languages and Russian communities in other countries but yes, Russian is spoken mainly in Russia.
