We have upgraded our website and starting from this episode we will include a list of popular Polish vocabulary.

Audio and transcript

Cze艣膰, Pawe艂 ponownie. Witam w drugim odcinku podcastu dla os贸b ucz膮cych si臋 j臋zyka polskiego.

Hi, Pawe艂 again. Welcome to the second episode of the podcast for people learning Polish.

To start with, I am sorry for the considerable delay in the publication of this second broadcast. Initially, I wanted to record one episode about every two weeks, but unfortunately, it is not always possible.

Pracuj臋 z w艂asnego domu i zdarza si臋, 偶e pojawiaj膮 si臋 problemy i nie zawsze mam odpowiednie warunki do pracy.

I work from my own home and it happens that there are problems and I don't always have the right conditions to work.

Po pierwszym odcinku rozpocz臋艂y si臋 wakacje. Moje dzieci przesta艂y chodzi膰 do szko艂y i przez wi臋kszo艣膰 czasu przebywa艂y w domu. Podobnie moja 偶ona, kt贸ra pracuje w szkole, r贸wnie偶 ona mia艂a wakacje i nie chodzi艂a do pracy.

After the first episode, the holidays began, my children stopped going to school and stayed at home most of the time. Similarly, my wife, who works at school, also had a vacation and did not go to work.

Potem by艂em jeszcze na urlopie i niestety dopiero teraz mog臋 normalnie pracowa膰.

So for the past few weeks, I've had everyone 'on my head' here and it was very difficult for me to focus. Then I took a break myself and unfortunately, only now I can work normally.

No, sytuacja w domu powoli wraca do normy. Wakacje si臋 sko艅czy艂y, moja 偶ona wr贸ci艂a do pracy. Dzisiaj rano moja m艂odsza c贸rka posz艂a dzisiaj pierwszy raz w nowym roku szkolnym do gimnazjum, a w przysz艂ym tygodniu moja starsza c贸rka r贸wnie偶 rozpoczyna nauk臋 w liceum.

Well, the situation at home slowly comes back to normal. Holidays are over, my wife returned to work. This morning my younger daughter went to secondary for the first time this year for the first time, and next week my older daughter is also starting her college.

System edukacji w Wielkiej Brytanii jest nieco inny ni偶 w Polsce, dlatego czasami trudno przet艂umaczy膰 nazwy szk贸艂.

The education system in Great Britain is slightly different than in Poland, so sometimes it is difficult to translate the names of schools. But maybe I'll tell you about it on some other occasion.

But now let's get to the main topic of this episode, which is holidays. I will tell you today how I spent them, where I went and what I saw.

Mam nadziej臋, 偶e b臋dzie to interesuj膮cy odcinek i 偶e znajdziecie w nim sporo przydatnych polskich s艂贸wek i zwrot贸w.

I hope it will be an interesting episode and that you will find a lot of useful Polish words and phrases in it.

In the meantime, we have changed our website a bit and under the podcast, you will find a list of useful phrases and a simple exercise.

Pracujemy r贸wnie偶 nad systemem komentarzy i niebawem b臋dziecie mogli pod ka偶dym odcinkiem zamie艣膰 swoje pytania i opinie o podca艣cie. Oczywi艣cie postaram si臋 odpowiedzie膰 na ka偶dy komentarz.

We are also working on a comment system and soon you will be able to post your questions and opinions about the podcast under each episode. Of course, I will try to answer every comment.

Wi臋c, wracaj膮c do tematu...

So, back to the topic ... As always and this year, we went with the whole family to Poland. We usually fly to Poland for holidays at the very beginning of the summer break, but this year we went a little later. Some Poles living in the UK go to Poland by car, but the journey is very long, sometimes it lasts even a day and night.

Doba w j臋zyku polskim to dzie艅 i noc, czyli 24 godziny. Z tego powodu my zawsze lecimy samolotem. Lot jest stosunkowo kr贸tki, bo trwa oko艂o 2.5 godziny. Niestety jest pewien minus w postaci drogich bilet贸w lotniczych.

"Doba" in the Polish language is a day and night, i.e. 24 hours. For this reason, we always fly by plane. The flight is relatively short because it lasts about 2.5 hours. Unfortunately, there is a minus in the form of expensive flight tickets.

Om贸wi臋 mo偶e, korzystaj膮c z okazji, kilka r贸偶nych sposob贸w przemieszczania si臋. Mo偶emy wi臋c jecha膰 samochodem, jecha膰 autobusem albo busem. Autobus to taki wi臋kszy pojazd, w kt贸rym podr贸偶uje kilkadziesi膮t os贸b. Natomiast bus to taki van, w kt贸rym podr贸偶uje kilkana艣cie os贸b.

I will discuss, taking this opportunity, a few different ways of getting around. So we can go by car, bus or minibus. The bus is such a larger vehicle in which a few dozens of people travel. A minibus is a van in which a dozen or so people travel.

I, oczywi艣cie, mo偶emy r贸wnie偶 jecha膰 poci膮giem. Je艣li chodzi o transport lotniczy, no to ju偶 wspomnia艂em, mo偶emy lecie膰 samolotem. Mo偶emy te偶 p艂yn膮膰 promem albo p艂yn膮膰 statkiem.

And, of course, we can also go by train. When it comes to air transport, I have already mentioned it, we can also fly by plane. We can also take a ferry or a ship.

Wi臋c polecieli艣my samolotem z lotniska East Midlands do Rzeszowa. Na samo lotnisko pojechali艣my z domu samochodem i zostawili艣my samoch贸d na parkingu. Po wyl膮dowaniu w Rzeszowie, z lotniska odebra艂 nas m贸j te艣膰, czyli ojciec mojej 偶ony i pojechali艣my do Le偶ajska.

So we flew by plane from East Midlands airport to Rzesz贸w. We went to the airport from the house by car and left the car in the parking lot. After landing in Rzesz贸w, my father-in-law, my wife's father, picked us up from the airport and we went to Le偶ajsk.

W tym roku nasz urlop w Polsce by艂 bardzo intensywny i mieli艣my naprawd臋 napi臋ty grafik. To wyra偶enie napi臋ty grafik mo偶emy przet艂umaczy膰 na angielski jako busy schedule, to znaczy, 偶e mieli艣my wiele rzeczy do zrobienia w bardzo kr贸tkim czasie.

This year our holidays in Poland were very intense and we had a really busy schedule. This expression can be translated into English as a 'busy schedule', which means that we had many things to do in a very short time.

W ci膮gu 10 dni, tyle trwa艂 nasz wyjazd do Polski, uda艂o nam si臋 odwiedzi膰 3 polskie miasta: Le偶ajsk, Krak贸w i Lublin. Oczywi艣cie widzieli艣my si臋 z naszymi rodzinami, ze znajomymi, z przyjaci贸艂mi, troch臋 zwiedzali艣my, byli艣my te偶 w parku rozrywki... Ale mo偶e wszystko po kolei...

During 10 days, this was our trip to Poland, we were able to visit 3 Polish cities: Le偶ajsk, Krak贸w and Lublin. Of course, we saw our families, friends and acquaintances, we did some sightseeing, we were also in the amusement park ... But maybe everything in turn ...

Mam tutaj w UK takiego dobrego znajomego, przyjaciela Roberta i Robert nigdy nie by艂 w Polsce, no i wspomina艂 mi, 偶e bardzo chcia艂by odwiedzi膰 nasz kraj. I pomy艣la艂em sobie, 偶e jak b臋dziemy w艂a艣nie w Polsce, to b臋dzie to dobra okazja, 偶eby go zaprosi膰 do Krakowa i troch臋 tam razem sp臋dzi膰 czasu.

I have a good friend here in the UK, a mate Robert and Robert has never been to Poland, and he mentioned that he would love to visit our country. And I thought that if we were in Poland, it would be a good opportunity to invite him to Krakow and spend some time there together.

No i tak te偶 si臋 sta艂o. Ja i moja 偶ona odebrali艣my go z lotniska i pojechali艣my do tego mieszkania.

And so it happened. We were able to rent an apartment on the Airbnb website in the centre of Krakow and Robert, or rather Bob, because that's what we call him, came to Krakow the day after us. Me and my wife picked him up at the airport and went to this apartment.

I jest to, wydaje mi si臋, jedno z najpi臋kniejszych polskich miast.

Krakow is, if you did not know, the former capital of Poland, now the capital is Warsaw. And it seems to be one of the most beautiful Polish cities.

Krak贸w ma bogat膮 histori臋, ciekaw膮 architektur臋, wiele zabytk贸w do zwiedzania.

Krakow has a rich history, interesting architecture, and many monuments to visit. Of course, it depends who likes what, but one of the cool elements of this city is the large market with many restaurants and pubs. Everyone finds something for themselves in the city.

My nie mieli艣my za du偶o czasu, bo sp臋dzili艣my tam tylko trzy dni, ale uda艂o nam si臋 sporo zobaczy膰. Byli艣my na Wawelu i widzieli艣my te偶 ziej膮cego ogniem metalowego smoka. Wawel to takie wzg贸rze na brzegu Wis艂y, kt贸re by艂o dawn膮 siedzib膮 polskich kr贸l贸w.

We didn't have much time because we only spent three days there, but we managed to see a lot. We went to Wawel and saw a fire-breathing metal dragon. Wawel is a hill next to the Vistula River, which was the former seat of Polish kings.

Znajduje si臋 tam zamek z kilkoma muzeami oraz klasztor, gdzie pochowani s膮 s艂ynni Polacy.

There is a castle with several museums and a monastery, where famous Poles are buried. Poets, for example, Mickiewicz and S艂owacki, politicians like Pi艂sudski and Sikorski, and of course kings, for example, Jan III Sobieski, who defeated the Turks near Vienna, and Kazimierz Wielki, who reformed Poland in the fourteenth century.

偶eby zadzwoni艂.

We also saw the Sigismund Bell, it is probably the most famous Polish bell, quite large, weighs over 12 tons and is activated or operated by several people at the same time, manually ... to ring.

C贸偶 jeszcze? Oczywi艣cie wys艂uchali艣my kilka razy hejna艂u z Wie偶y Mariackiej. No i, je偶eli tak si臋 sta艂o, to ostrzega艂 w艂a艣nie sygna艂em tr膮bki.

What else? Of course, we listened to the bugle call from St. Mary's Tower several times. This is a melody played on the trumpet. And here's ai interesting fact. It was generally about a guard on the tower watching if any enemy troops were approaching to the city. And if it happened, he was warning with a trumpet signal.

I je偶eli b臋dziecie s艂ucha膰 tej melodii to zauwa偶ycie, 偶e w pewnym momencie ta melodia nagle si臋 urywa.

And if you listen to this melody, you'll notice that at some point this melody suddenly stops. Legend says that during the Tartar invasion the watchman on the tower began to sound the alarm, but he was hit in the throat by an arrow and that is why the melody of the bugle call suddenly ends.

No generalnie, Krak贸w to bardzo ciekawe miasto i je偶eli nigdy nie byli艣cie, to zdecydowanie zach臋cam Was do odwiedzenia.

In general, Krakow is very interesting cities and if you have never been there before, I definitely encourage you to visit. There are indeed many things to see in and around the city.

Jest to jedna z najwi臋kszych atrakcji turystycznych w Polce z rze藕bami i ca艂ymi komnatami wykutymi w soli kamiennej.

Not far from Krakow is the well-known salt mine in Wieliczka. It is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Poland with sculptures and entire chambers carved in rock salt.

If you are interested in history, for example, World War II, it is worth visiting the concentration camp in O艣wi臋cim, which is also not far from Krakow.

C贸偶 jeszcze? No, je偶eli wolicie sp臋dzi膰 czas na 艂onie natury, to warto pochodzi膰 po polskich g贸rach Tatrach i odwiedzi膰 Zakopane.

What else? Well, if you prefer to spend time in the bosom of nature, it's worth coming to the Polish Tatra mountains and visiting Zakopane. It is an interesting city located in the mountains.

Nasz znajomy Bob by艂 bardzo zadowolony, bardzo podoba艂 mu si臋 pobyt w Krakowie, polska kultura, kuchnia... Wyj膮tkiem by艂y oscypki z 偶urawin膮.

Our friend Bob was very pleased, he enjoyed his stay in Krakow, Polish culture, cuisine ... I didn't mention it, but we were able to sample several Polish dishes such as sour soup, dumplings and pork chop. But we didn't like everything. The exception were "oscypki" with cranberry [sauce].

Oscypki to taki ser, w臋dzony ser, przygotowywany z mleka owczego. No one by艂y w smaku takie troch臋 gumowe i nie smakowa艂y nam a偶 tak bardzo, ale generalnie polska kuchnia jest smaczna i wiele os贸b zachwyca si臋 ni膮.

Oscypki is a cheese, smoked cheese, made from sheep's milk. Well, they tasted a bit rubbery and we didn't like it so much, but generally, Polish cuisine is tasty and many people love it.

Pozosta艂o nam mniej wi臋cej 6 dni. No, wype艂nione one by艂y spotkaniami z rodzin膮, ze znajomymi, z przyjaci贸艂mi w Le偶ajsku i potem jeszcze w Lublinie, gdzie mieszkaj膮 moi rodzice i m贸j brat z rodzin膮.

Time passed very quickly in Krakow and we had to take Bob to the airport and return to Le偶ajsk. We have about 6 days left. Well, they were filled with meetings with the family, with friends, with buddies in Le偶ajsk and then in Lublin, where my parents and my brother lives with his family.

Po 10 dniach wr贸cili艣my do UK odrobin臋 zm臋czeni, ale szcz臋艣liwi i zadowoleni, bo naprawd臋 mile sp臋dzili艣my czas w Polsce.

All in all, as I mentioned, it was quite an intensive holiday. After 10 days we returned to the UK a bit tired, but happy and satisfied because we had a really nice time in Poland.

I to w艂a艣ciwie wszystko tym razem. Mam nadziej臋, 偶e ten odcinek podcastu Wam si臋 podoba艂 i 偶e odrobin臋 pomo偶e Wam w nauce j臋zyka.

And that's all this time. I hope you enjoyed this episode of the podcast and that it will help you learn the language a little bit.

Postaram si臋 nagra膰 kolejny odcinek za mniej wi臋cej dwa tygodnie i mam nadziej臋, 偶e spotkamy si臋 ponownie. Cze艣膰!

I will try to record another episode in about two weeks and hope to meet again. Bye!
